FJÄLLKVINNAN

The Mountain Woman, 2021 (FILM EXCERPT)

CINEMATOGRAPHY · EDITING · COLOR GRADE

A documentary by Mats Lagerman about Gun Mårtensson and the disappearing traditions of mountain farming in western Härjedalen, Sweden.

Growing up on the remote Gunnarsvallen mountain pasture, Gun experienced a way of life shaped by livestock, seasonal farming and the surrounding landscape. Through her memories, Fjällkvinnan documents both a personal history and a piece of Swedish cultural heritage that has largely disappeared.

I worked as cinematographer and editor on the documentary, filming across Gunnars, Gunnarsvallen and the surrounding mountain landscape. The production combined observational documentary photography, intimate conversations and extensive location work, including a multi-hour hike into Gunnarsvallen with equipment and aerial photography of the isolated settlement.

In the edit, I shaped the material around Gun's memories and the landscape connected to them, combining interviews, observational sequences, archive material and aerial imagery into a quiet, visually driven portrait of place, memory and cultural heritage.

The film premiered at the cinema in Tännäs and has since been presented in cultural and heritage contexts, including a public screening at Jamtli in Östersund.
